Congratulations to new Governor General

Congratulations to Her Excellency Sam Mostyn.

I was moved to be in the Senate Chamber as our 28th Governor-General was sworn in.

Her Excellency spoke from the heart about the place of care in Australian society, which she described as a gentle thought and an outstretched hand.

In so doing, she reminded us all to connect with the ‘quieter, better part of ourselves”.

For so many women whose paid and unpaid care forms the backbone of our nation, Her Excellency’s words will have deep resonance.

Because for too long, care work has been invisible work.

And by choosing to elevate care in her words to the Chamber and the Australian people, the Governor-General made that work visible and valued.
